ISO 9712:2021 NDT Courses
Our training programmes are structured by method and level, and are designed to build competence progressively from supervised execution (Level I) through independent evaluation (Level II) to technical leadership and governance (Level III).
What each level is designed to achieve
| Level | Typical responsibilities | Training emphasis |
|---|---|---|
| Level I | Performs specific NDT operations to written instructions under supervision; records results. | Method fundamentals, equipment handling, safe practice, repeatable technique execution and basic reporting. |
| Level II | Selects techniques, performs inspections independently; interprets and evaluates to acceptance criteria; reports. | Technique selection and optimisation, interpretation/evaluation, code/standard use, report quality and traceability. |
| Level III | Defines NDT strategy, validates procedures; provides technical direction and governance; audits and resolves complex cases. | Procedure development/approval, advanced problem solving, programme management, reliability/limitations, compliance oversight. |
Minimum training durations and experience requirements depend on the method, level and applicable product sector. Where needed, we provide candidate guidance on eligibility routes and the documentary evidence expected for certification.
Course structure
Each course is built around competence outcomes and is delivered as a balanced combination of theory, worked examples, and supervised practical sessions. Practical work includes equipment set-up, calibration/verification, technique execution, interpretation, and report writing.
Theory
- Method principles, limitations, sources of error
- Relevant terminology, standards and acceptance concepts
- Procedure discipline, traceability and reporting
Practical
- Equipment selection, checks and set-up
- Calibration/verification using reference standards
- Indication recognition and evaluation (as applicable by level)
Assessment readiness
- Exam-style questions aligned to level expectations
- Mock practical tasks and reporting exercises
- Feedback focused on competence gaps and corrective learning
Methods offered
The detail below explains the technical scope typically covered per method. The exact depth and practical task selection is tailored to the training level.
VT — Visual Testing
- Surface condition, lighting, access and viewing parameters
- Direct and remote visual techniques; limitations and reliability
- Discontinuity types, sizing concepts and reporting
- Acceptance principles and documentation discipline

- Calibration/verification (range, sensitivity) and set-up control
- Defect response recognition; sizing concepts and limitations
- Procedure application, reporting and traceability
RT — Radiographic Testing
- Radiation fundamentals, safety principles and controls
- Technique parameters, image quality concepts and artefacts
- Film/digital considerations (as applicable) and evaluation principles
- Documentation and reporting expectations
ET — Eddy Current Testing
- Electromagnetic principles, probe types and frequency selection
- Signal presentation, lift-off, conductivity and permeability effects
- Defect detection concepts, sorting and basic evaluation
- Set-up verification and reporting
Certification under an ISO/IEC 17024 accredited scheme
Where certification is pursued, assessment is conducted against defined competence criteria, with controls intended to protect impartiality, consistency of decisions, and traceability of records.
We can advise on the candidate journey (training, experience evidence, vision requirements, examination, and certification maintenance), including renewal/recertification routes where applicable.
